PGA Tour suffers another blow after Scottie Scheffler decision and Billy Horschel injury

Jason Day is the latest big-name player to withdraw from the Truist Championship after Billy Horschel announced he needed surgery.

Day was in the field for the $20 million signature event at Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, which tees off on Thursday, but he pulled out on Tuesday. The Australian has been replaced by Patrick Rodgers in the field, while the PGA Championship lineup has also been announced with 16 LIV Golf players invited.

It is the second time this season Day has withdrawn from one of the PGA Tour's biggest events. The 37-year-old pulled out of The Players in March due to illness, but he has yet to announce the reason behind his withdrawal from the Truist.

Day's withdrawal follows Horschel's announcement that he faces months off the course due to a hip injury. The issue forced the Florida native to pull out on the eve of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last month, and he revealed on Tuesday that he needs surgery.

They are not the only big names who will not tee it up at Philadelphia Cricket Club. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is taking a week off after his dominant victory at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday. Instead, the 28-year-old is prioritizing next week's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

That leaves Masters champion Rory McIlroy as the favorite to win this week. The world No. 2 is chasing his fourth victory of 2025 after a sensational start to the season.

Collin Morikawa is a distant second-favorite for the victory, ahead of Ludvig Aberg and Justin Thomas – both of whom have already won signature events this season at the Genesis Invitational and RBC Heritage, respectively.

While it remains to be seen whether the reason for ex-world No. 1 Day's absence in Philly has any lasting significance, Horschel has had to come to terms with the fact that the remainder of his season has been significantly compromised.

The American is chasing his first Ryder Cup appearance, but his chances have been left in ruin as he faces a lengthy spell out of the game.

"Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the last couple of weeks after I withdrew from the Zurich Classic," Horschel posted on social media. "After meeting with doctors and talking with my team, we are going to have right hip surgery early next week out in Colorado.

"It is an unfortunate situation, with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure. I am already looking forward to getting the rehab started and getting back to practicing.

"Hopefully returning to the golf course late summer, early fall. I've got a great support system with my family, friends, sponsors, partners.

"I can't thank them enough with their continued support. We will get through this and continue to share positive news on how rehab is going."
