Man Utd 'nice boy' told to be more 'arrogant'

Troy Deeney has called on ‘nice boy’ Benjamin Sesko to show more ‘arrogance’ in his performances following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

The Red Devils’ dismal start to the top-flight season sank to a new low with their third loss after only six matches, with Ruben Amorim facing further questions over his future at Old Trafford.

Sesko had given United a glimmer of hope after Igor Thiago’s early double for Brentford, the Slovenian’s first-ever goal in the Premier League following a £74million move from RB Leipzig in the summer.

But United were unable to gain any momentum on the back of Sesko’s close-range effort and Mathias Jensen put the game to bed deep into stoppage time – after Bruno Fernandes’ second-half penalty miss – to inflict yet more misery on the visitors.

The result leaves United languishing down in 14th place in the table, just four points above the drop zone and eight points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.

Amorim will be under intense pressure to steer the club back to winning ways when they return to action at home to high-flying Sunderland next weekend.

On Sesko’s latest showing, ex-Watford captain Deeney told talkSPORT: ‘I ain’t seen nothing of him.

‘He won a header against Chelsea the other day and I thought that was good, but he’s 6 ft 12 [sic] so he should win a header!

‘I’m 6 ft and I managed to win headers so maybe I’m being a little bit too harsh.

‘I’m gave him a bit of a pass for Grimsby because he had just come in and you don’t want to step on any toes, but I like my strikers to be arrogant because a striker is going to miss more than they score. That’s just factual.

‘Also, you’ve got to be able to deal with missing. [Matheus] Cunha missed and he didn’t care, did the same again. [Bryan] Mbeumo missed a penalty and didn’t care, same with [Bruno] Fernandes.’

According to Deeney, Sesko currently lacks the arrogance needed to be a top Premier League striker.

However, the former Watford forward was keen to emphasise just how difficult it can be for a young player adjusting to life in a new league and a fresh environment.

‘There’s that arrogance that you have to have: “I missed one, so what, I’ll score the next three”, that’s the mindset you have to have as an attacking player,’ Deeney added.

‘I just think when I look at him that he looks like a nice boy.

‘But there are a load of things that happen with transfers that we don’t see and obviously I’ve been in it so I know.

‘He’s moving home, he’s young. Has he ever lived away from his parents? Culturally, the food might not be what he’s used to.’

Deeney speculated that Sesko may be missing certain creature comforts after leaving Germany for England back in August.

‘I see my mum every Wednesday and have done since I moved out. If I had to move to Germany, I can’t see my mum every Wednesday,’ he continued.

‘Of course I could fly her to me or I could fly there and that would be great, but it’s going there, that drive you have, that first walk in the door, that cup of tea that you have, those little bits that you can’t measure.

‘So for younger players who aren’t as mature, it’s a whole different thing that they have to deal with.

‘Everyone talks about the money but you’re a human. You might want to be around family, you might have family members that are sick and poorly. There are all these things that go on

‘If he scores week-in, week-out then nobody give a s*** but he’s not doing that so maybe there are these things going on as well.’
