Boy, 17, suffers 'bleed on brain' as fans clash in stadium and fight outside ground
A teenage Warrington Wolves fan is in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a 'fight' with Widnes Vikings supporters at a game between the two rugby league rivals.
Violent scenes broke out during and after the 'friendly' match at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday night, January 9, which saw the home side thrash the visitors 50-12. Cheshire Police have confirmed they are investigating disorder within the ground and a fight afterwards, which left a 17-year-old boy seriously injured.
The Warrington Guardian reports that home and away supporters clashed during the Cheshire derby encounter, with incidents breaking out in the south-west corner of the ground, as security stewards were forced to intervene to break-up the confrontation.
The pre-season game between Super League side Warrington and Championship outfit Widnes was temporarily halted, just minutes before the full-time hooter, as a result of the disturbance.
But the clashes continued after play was resumed and the match ended - with police called to the scene and cordons put in place
Rugby league journalist John Davidson wrote on X: "Understand there was a teenage Warrington Wolves fan who was allegedly attacked by a Widnes Vikings fan last night outside the stadium.
"The Warrington fan fell, hit his head on the concrete, had a bleed on the brain and is in hospital. Warrington officials are aware and have been supporting the family."
Cheshire Police confirmed a 'fight' broke out and that a 17-year-old boy had been taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.
