Indonesia's BPOM backs safe nicotine therapy products for smokers
Indonesia's Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has assured the safety of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products after establishing regulatory standards, as part of efforts to support individuals seeking to quit smoking.
BPOM Deputy for Drug, Narcotics, Psychotropics, Precursors, and Addictive Substance Monitoring William Adi Teja said in Jakarta on Thursday that reducing smoking prevalence requires a comprehensive approach, including education, smoke-free areas, and therapy.
"The availability of medically standardized therapy products with official BPOM distribution permits provides safety assurance for people who want to break free from dependence," he said.
Adi said BPOM supports evidence-based innovations that can help people with a strong desire to quit smoking.
According to him, tobacco control requires cross-sector collaboration because the challenges extend beyond health issues to social and economic aspects.
"Expanding access to safe, evidence-based nicotine replacement therapy products can serve as one of the solutions," he said.
BPOM, the Health Ministry, Kenvue, Guardian, and the Indonesian Society of Respirology (PDPI) are collaborating in the #SehatTanpaRokok (Healthy Without Smoking) campaign to prevent smoking from an early age through broader health education, particularly among children and adolescents.
The campaign also includes medical training, comprehensive education for healthcare workers and the public, and public service announcements conducted jointly with the Health Ministry and PDPI.
Earlier, Kenvue Indonesia Marketing Director Fika Yolanda said the company remains committed to supporting government efforts to reduce smoking prevalence in Indonesia.
"Our main goal is to ensure that every individual who wants to quit smoking receives proper assistance and access to scientifically proven medical solutions," she said.
Kenvue is also partnering with Guardian to expand public access to Nicorette, the first and only NRT product officially recognized as pharmacotherapy in Indonesia for smoking cessation.
